MAY 2019 THIS week's PICTURE

Kat and Brian's Patio, Knoxville, Tennessee : photo by Malcolm Aslett

This is a reworking of a photo from a year or two ago which I was unhappy with in a couple of ways.

It has a lot of details of physical things that I like, like the bare feet on the chair, the carved stone above the door, the lines of red brick, the pyramid of roof, the sharp red stick insect of a table, the blue clouded sky, and so forth. So it is a collection of finite detail of particular forms. I wasn't particularly taken with my legs - and I have discovered in my life that no one else is either - but in the overall scheme they work nicely both as shapes and also as a reminder that this is a photo about observing.

The mix of styles has smooth transitions as well as rough ones, balance and distortion, and though the casual observer might think it a 'proper' photograph there are a couple of exceedingly abrupt cuts, one with the leg to the left and the other with an extra bit of table to the right. This was to make up space and keep things in I wanted, like the two views of the boy who still remains elusive.

The original had me caught up in trying to keep the red wall as much a rectangle as I could make it. It really didn't want to do that. This malformed other parts that I never fully resolved to my satisfaction.

I guess if I worked on it again I would try and do something incorporating both images.

I thought I had put this one up before. Maybe not. Here it is below just in case.
